Swine Flu PandemicPandemic Influenza (Flu) Outbreak
Background
A pandemic flu outbreak happens following antigenic changes in a current flu virus which result in a new virus being introduced into the human population such as the H5NI (avian) virus; or following an animal virus crossing the species barrier as appears to be happening in the current situation with swine flu.
While the (avian) H5N1 virus has a very high mortality rate in humans, (60% - 90%, depending on factors such as age) the current reproductive value (infection ability) is less than 2-4 (measles 11-14, Polio 5-7). At present the (swine) H1N1 virus appears to be quite different. While the morbidity rate in swine flu is high, the mortality rate remains low (1-4%).
Planning
Globally, the medical world has been preparing for a pandemic influenza outbreak for some time. The global response is led by the World Health Organisation (WHO) who developed a Six (6) phase plan, which consider the response to a pandemic outbreak wherever this may occur, while the UK response will be led by the Health Protection Agency (HPA) who have developed a UK Alert Level plan, numbered One(1) through to Four(4)
Regular updates will be available from these agencies throughout the current situation

HPA:http://www.hpa.org.uk/webw/HPAweb&Page&HPAwebHome/Page/1153496333353?p=1153496333353
CDC: http://wwwn.cdc.gov/travel/
Local responsibility for emergency planning and response arrangements will be managed by Local and Regional Services Division (LaRS), however the Health Protection Agency strongly recommend that all Business's consider their own response to a pandemic outbreak within their Business Continuity Plan
Reducing the Spread
Pandemic flu differs from ordinary flu because it is a based on a new virus that can spread very rapidly from human to human, Because it is a new virus no-one will have immunity and all humans are at risk of catching it including healthy adults, as well as vulnerable groups such as the elderly, young children, and those with existing conditions. Symptoms include sudden onset of fever, cough or shortness of breath.
The virus is made up of tiny particles that are spread to others in droplets when you cough or sneeze. The following precautions can reduce the spread: ¢ Use clean tissues when you cough or sneeze, and bin after one use ¢ Wash hands with soap and hot water, or sanitizer gel, regularly ¢ If you become ill STAY AT HOME and inform your Dr of your symptoms by telephone ¢ In the UK, check your symptoms on www.nhs.uk
If travelling overseas, carry a pandemic flu personal protection kit, available from www.exmed.co.uk

Mazima Springs Hippo CrisisPictured are Nick Knowles and Dai Jones. Below is a quote from the Born Free Foundations CEO Will Travers.
"How incredibly fortunate. Nick Knowles and ex+med in Kenya when a crisis happens and what do they do? Phone Born Free! I am enormously grateful to everyone for not only deciding to take action but rallying financially to make sure that a disaster did not become a total tragedy. While the world-famous Mazima Springs did lose some Hippo this recent drought, the hundreds of bales of emergency food paid for by Nick, Dai Jones of ex+med & Born Free, mean that the survivors will make it through the rains which have just broken and the new vegetation which is on the way".
